Individual 2023 tax returns are due by Monday, April 15th, 2024
2020 tax returns that have not yet been filed must be filed by May 17th, 2024 to capture any refund that may be due

🐝Tax Year 2023 “on-time” deadline: Monday, April 15th, 2024

The filing deadline for 2023 tax returns is on Monday, April 15th, 2024. This considers tax returns to be filed “on-time.”

Taxpayers who chose to file an extension for time to file their tax returns will have their filing deadline extended to October 15, 2024. This DOES NOT extend the deadline to PAY your taxes—taxes must be paid by the filing deadline even if an extension was filed. Otherwise, additional penalties and interest may accrue.

🐝Tax Year 2020 “last chance” deadline: Friday, May 17th, 2024

Taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2020 tax return, but may be eligible for a refund, must file their 2020 tax return by Friday, May 17th, 2024 to be able to claim their refund. After this date, the refund will expire and taxpayers will no longer be able to claim any potential refund for that tax year.

The IRS allows taxpayers 3 years from the due date to claim a tax refund from their tax return if they are eligible for one. The original filing deadline for 2020 tax returns was May 17, 2021, which was extended from April to May due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
